It was never really a very robust product. My biggest objection with Apple Enterprise products was OS X Server itself. They could have been great if Apple stayed the course, but they realized it was a race to the bottom in the server market and who really wants to compete there unless you really have to? Look at IBM, not even they can make money selling servers these days. They just did not really keep pace with what was happening in the x86 server world. I don't think its accurate to say Apple servers (xServe) were sad, they actually were really quite good. Their products pros and cons seem oddly balanced - almost perfect but then with some silly flaw that Apple won't fix so it can't be used.

It's a shame as so many senior managers, department heads and directors love purchasing Apple products as they work well for them at home so they bring them into a work environment thinking it will be dead easy to integrate.

To which I explained there weren't any Apple built software tools that made it easy to integrate Apples into Windows domains, all software tools were being built by third parties, to which he said exactly!Ī guess that that partly explains why the Apple management tools are so bad and were non existent for some time once they started making mobile devices as well. Interesting what you say about it promoting buying Apple file servers, when I spoke with an Apple engineer on why they were discontinuing Xserve's or Mac Pro's that could be used as large storage servers, he said that they figured companies don't want to buy Apple servers to be able to support Apple devices, instead they will want them to integrate with their existing servers which may all be Windows based. We believe Apple is avoiding fixing it because it promotes buying Apple file servers which provide the meta data and don't have the delay. To the best of my knowledge, 10.10 does not fix it. If you have a 10.3 machine it should be fine.
